Alyssa Movchan Signs With University of Hawaii at Hilo

By Wes McCurtis

CYPRESS, CA -  Cypress College women's basketball standout Alyssa Movchan has accepted an athletic scholarship offer from The University of Hawai'i at Hilo, where she will continue her basketball career next season.

The University of Hawai'i at Hilo, competes at the NCAA Division II level as a member of the PacWest Conference. "I wanted to pick a school that had my major with a good program and a place I'd feel at home. I have family in Hawaii and the environment was really friendly," said Movchan. "I'm trying to help lead our team to as many wins as possible. I want to help better the program and I think my ball handling and shooting can help the team."

The two-time All-Orange Empire Conference First Team selection helped lead the Lady Chargers to back-to-back OEC titles. Movchan started 57 games at guard for the Chargers, averaging 10.9 points, 2.6 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game. She ended her career at Cypress ranked fourth all-time in three pointers made (99) and seventh all-time in three-point percentage (34.5%).

Movchan admits that former Cypress sharpshooter Lauren Hong, who just wrapped up her senior season at Hilo, played a role in her decision to accept their offer. "She really helped. I wanted to stay close to home at first, but she gave me a lot of positive feedback about the coaches and players. She also talked about the experience, and how beneficial stepping out of my comfort zone would be," said Movchan.

The Cerritos High School alumna will major in kinesiology. She plans to get her masters and become an occupational therapist after graduation.
