CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress Chargers Men's Water Polo team pulled off an exhilarating 12-10 victory over Grossmont College in a night game. After falling behind 3-0 in the first quarter, the Chargers mounted an impressive comeback, ending the first period with a key goal and building momentum that carried them to victory.
Grossmont took control early, scoring three unanswered goals before Cypress found the back of the net with just 18 seconds left in the first period. Porter Rosenlof's breakaway goal was a pivotal moment, sparking the Chargers' resurgence. By the second period, Cypress had tied the game 3-3 and eventually took their first lead, going up 4-3. The teams traded goals throughout the rest of the quarter, with Grossmont regaining a 7-6 lead heading into halftime after a last-second goal.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams fighting for control. Grossmont held a slim lead at times, but the Chargers refused to give in. With 15 seconds left in the third period, Cypress managed to tie the game 9-9. The fourth quarter was the turning point for the Chargers, as they scored the final two goals of the game, marking the first time they led by multiple goals. The defense, anchored by goalkeeper Zach Populous, was solid down the stretch, securing the win.
Key contributors for the Chargers included Kai Banua, who netted three goals, and Nathan Burgos, who added one goal and three assists. Populous was a force in the net, recording nine saves to help preserve the victory. Cypress looks to continue their strong start to the season as they build on this hard-fought win.
