Chargers Dominate Season Opening Double Header, 5-4 and 9-4

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress baseball team (4-0, 3-0 OEC) hosted Irvine Valley College (0-4, 0-3 OEC) in a double header on Friday afternoon. The Chargers pulled out two impressive wins over the Lasers to complete the four game sweep to open the season.

GAME 1

Nico Alex (3 for 3, 2 RBI's) ignited the Chargers offense and was hottest bat in the linuep. Center fielder Kyle Rasmussen (1 for 3, 1 RBI) and catcher Jason McDonnell (1 for 2, 1 RBI) both contributed to the Chargers victory over the Lasers by each knocking in a run. Irvine Valley's Casey Kudell (1 for 2, 1 RBI) and Jack Haggerty (1 for 2, 1 RBI) led the offense  for the Lasers.

The Chargers started their scoring run in the bottom of the second when Nico Alex doubled to left field, knocking Corbin Ellis in and notching the Chargers first RBI of the game. In the bottom of the third, Jason McDonnell flied out to left field on a sacrifice fly allowing Adam Yamashita to score. Later, Kyle Rasmussen singled to right field where Nico Alex advanced to third and Corbin Ellis took it home, scoring his second run of the game. In the top of the fifth, IVC"s Jack Haggerty singled to right field allowing the Lasers to take the lead. The Chargers were down in the top of the fifth until Marc Lidd singled to left field and Nolan Ornelas scored to tie the game. Cypress regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Nico Alex singled to right field and Marc Lidd scored. The Chargers won the first game of the afternoon, 5-4.

GAME 2

Coby Morales (3 for 4, 2 RBI, 1 run) batted third and led the game in RBI's along with Mario Tostado (1 for 4, 2 RBI's) who knocked two batters in on his double to center field in bottom of the eighth. Brenden Harris (3 for 3, 1 RBI, 2 hits) was perfect at the plate and was one of two players to homer during the game. Ethan Johannes (1 for 2, 1 RBI), Gabe Briones (1 for 5, 1 RBI), Hank Schineller (1 for 3, 1 RBI), and Kyle Dobson (1 for 2, 1 RBI) account for the four RBI's for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley kicked the scoring off early in game two scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a hit batter and a walk. Coby Morales answered in bottome of the first with a two run homerun tying up the game at two. Brenden Harris hit a solo shot over the center field wall in the bottom half of the second inning to regain the lead for the Chargers. George Briones of IVC singled to center field in the top of the 8th inning to bring in a run and pull the Lasers within one, 4-5. The Chargers regained a comfortable lead in the bottom half of the 8th scoring four runs in the inning. Andrew Sojka singled in Jake Reed followed by a bases loaded double that scored two runs off the bat of Mario Tostado. Pitcher, Colton Bulger, would come in to pitch the ninth inning striking out the final batter and close the book on a 9-4 Charger's victory. 

UP NEXT: The Chargers will take on the Mounties in a four-game series next week starting Tuesday (4/20) at 2pm. Cypress will be hosting the Mounties again on Thursday (4/22) at 2pm before traveling to Mt. San Antonio on Friday (4/23) for a double header starting at 12pm.
