No. 8 Chargers Dominate Rustlers in Series Opener, 7-2

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College baseball team (25-8, 10-6 OEC) extended their win streak to six games with a series opening victory at home over Golden West College (17-14, 6-10 OEC) on Tuesday, 7-2. The Chargers entered the week ranked No. 8 in the most recent CCCSIA State Poll.

Eric Chavarria (W, 7-2) received the win in his eighth start of the season, allowing just 2 earned runs on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts in 7 innings of work.  Golden West starter, Wyatt Adams, received the loss.

The Chargers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Hayden Winters (3-for-4, HR, 2RBI) hit a two-run moon shot over the wall in the centerfield to give Cypress a 2-0 lead. Cypress added one run to their lead in the third and another in the fourth on RBI groundouts to take a 4-0 lead.

In the fifth, Jesse Lopez (1-for-4, 2RBI) sent a solo shot over the center field wall for his fourth home run of the season, extending the lead to 5-0.

The Rustlers responded with two runs in the top of the sixth, but Cypress quickly answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.

Cypress reliever Raul Herrada would close out the game for Cypress with two shutout innings, securing the 7-2 victory in game one.

The series will move to Golden West College for game two on Thursday at 2:00pm, before returning to Cypress College for game three on Friday at 2:00pm.
