Chargers Defeat Tigers With Walk-off HR, 5-4

Cypress, CA- The Cypress College baseball team (14-3, 4-1 OEC) defeated the Riverside College Tigers (11-7, 1-4 OEC) in game two of their three game series on Tuesday afternoon.

Brandon Gonzalez (3-for-5) lifted the Chargers to a 5-4 victory in walk-off fashion after launching his first homerun of the season over the right field wall in the Chargers' first at bat of the ninth inning. Andrew Quezada (2-0) received the win for Cypress after allowing two hits and collecting three strikeouts in three innings of relief.

Early fielding errors from the Chargers allowed the Tigers to take an early 2-0 lead in the first as an error at 3B allowed Anthony Ward to reach 1B, followed by an error by the right fielder, which helped score Ward and get Dean Miller on base. Michael Darr followed up with a singled to left field that advanced Miller to 2B. Miller would end up scoring the second run of the inning as Cypress attempted to turn a double-play but Broddy Weiss beat the throw to reach 1B on a fielder's choice.

Cypress would answer with a three run rally of their own in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded and one out, Gonzalez hit an RBI single to right field scoring Bo Coolen. Nick Reeser followed that up with a 2RBI single, giving Cypress a 3-2 lead. The Chargers would add a run to their total in the third inning when Willie Aguilar managed to score on a passed ball.

Trailing 4-2, Riverside manufactured some offense in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game. Cody Covington got it going with a single to lead off the inning for the Tigers. Then Tommy Pincin hit an RBI double to center field to score Covington. With two outs and Pincin on 2B, Miller singled to the shortstop and advanced to 2B on a throwing error by the shortstop that allowed Pincin to score and tie the game at four a piece.

Riverside was unable to break the tie in their remaining at bats and were forced to watch the Chargers celebrate at home plate after the walk-off homerun by Gonzalez to end the game.

Cypress will resume action at home on Thursday, March 17 in the final game of their series against Riverside at 2:00pm.
