Alexis Flores Commits to San Diego Christian College

CYPRESS, CA - Originally from Whittier, CA, Alexis Flores played for the both the women's volleyball and beach volleyball teams from 2019 to 2021. Going on her third season with the Chargers, Alexis is excited to continue playing competitively at the next level at San Diego Christian College. Alexis will be earning her AA in Kinesiology and has aspirations to become an athletic trainer in the near future.

Alexis grew up playing all different types of sports but found a love for indoor volleyball during her freshman year at La Serna High School. After making the freshman team, Alexis discovered her passion for volleyball ran deeper than any other sport she played in the past. She made the varsity team her sophomore year and became a starter during her junior year. As a senior, Alexis earned Del Rio League MVP and was excited to continue playing at the collegiate level. Alexis received a full-ride scholarship to SDCC and will begin in spring 2022.

1. How do you think being a Cypress Charger prepared you for you playing beach volleyball at San Diego Christian College?

"I feel like it prepared me very well in terms of knowing the game. I don't think a lot of indoor players realize how different each game is played and that it's not as simple as trying to go play beach volleyball. I was lucky to be surrounded by such knowledgeable players who were able to teach me the basics and build my skills. I'm pretty quick at picking up new things and found that I was really good at beach volleyball and loved it immediately. I like how the game is extremely active and that I get to touch the ball more as opposed to playing middle on the indoor team. I get to pass, set, and hit during beach volleyball which makes me more engaged in the game. I love that I can dive in sand and not have to worry about hitting the gym floor. They're both completely different sports."

2. What is your favorite memory as a student athlete at Cypress? How do you think the team dynamic will be different at SDCC?

"I'm really going to miss the people I met and the friends I made at Cypress. Thankfully, one of my teammates got a full-ride to play indoor at SDCC so we plan on living together next spring. I'm going to miss the coaching staff and all the great conversations I've had with Nancy (Nancy Welliver, Head Volleyball Coach) and Scott (Scott Tucker, Head Athletics Trainer). I really like the SDCC campus and think it will be interesting to see how their training schedule is different from Cypress. I think SDCC will require more commitment and individual motivation to compete. I'm excited to come in as a transfer because I think being a Charger has definitely prepared me to play at the next level."

3. What are some of your athletic goals for SDCC? Do you have any plans to play professionally in the future?

"I think what's really interesting is that I'm going to be going to a four-year university and have never played any years of beach. Since our season got cancelled last year, I still have four years left of eligibility so I plan on playing volleyball for as long as I can. I want to play two years at SDCC with my scholarship and then my last two at a school that has a good kinesiology program so I can get my masters towards becoming an athletic trainer. Ideally if the opportunity presents itself, I would love to play at the professional level. I love the world of sports and being around athletes and couldn't image doing anything else. I thrive in this environment and want to help student athletes in the future."
