No. 4 Baseball Set for Conference Play After 6-4 Victory Over San Diego

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College baseball team (13-3) defeated San Diego City College (4-6) by the score of 6-4 at home on Thursday afternoon. The Chargers entered the game ranked No. 4 in Southern California. 

Shaine McNeely (2-0) picked up his second victory of the season in his second start for the Chargers. McNeely dominated the Knights as he threw a one-hitter over 5 innings while striking out 8 batters. Brandon Alamo (3-for-4, RBI), Paul Gomez (3-for-4, RBI), and Logan Swofford (2-for-3, RBI) powered the Chargers offense. 

Garrett Yocum (1-4) received the loss for the Knights as he allowed 4 runs on 11 hits over 5.2 innings pitched.

The Chargers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning after Alamo reached base on a triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Garrett Calvert (0-for-4, RBI) to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. The Chargers offense continued to produce in the bottom of the third inning. With one out Alamo ripped an RBI single into to left field to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead. After Pierson Loska (2-for-3) scored on a wild pitch, Gomez had an RBI single of his own to increase the Chargers lead to 4-0. The Chargers tacked on 2 more runs in the eighth courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Swofford and a pinch hit RBI single by Elias Ledesma (1-fo-1, RBI) to take a 6-0 lead into the ninth inning. 

The Knights made it a close game in the ninth as they scored 4 runs to get within 6-4 with 2 outs. Jake Mahood (Sv, 1) saved the game for the Chargers as he got Anthony Warneke to pop out to the third baseman with a runner on second to end the game and give the Chargers a 6-4 win. 

Cypress baseball will open Orange Empire Conference play at Riverside City College on Tuesday, March 7 at 2:00 PM.
