No. 1 Chargers Begin Homestand With 9-1 Victory Over No. 3 Glendale

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College baseball team (6-1) picked up a 9-1 victory over Glendale College (4-2) at home on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers entered the game ranked No. 1 in Southern California, while the Vaqueros entered the day ranked No. 3.

Andrew Quezada (3-0) earned his third win of the season in three starts for the Chargers. Quezada threw 6 scoreless innings, allowing only 3 hits while notching 6 strikeouts. Sophomore third baseman Angel Ortiz (3-for-4, 2RBI) and sophomore first baseman Garrett Calvert (2-for-4, RBI) powered the Cypress offense.

Marco Quintanar (1-1) received the loss for the Vaqueros, allowing 5 hits and 4 runs in 4 innings of work.

Cypress opened up the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning with runners on first and second. Calvert hit a line drive single to center field to advance the runners. Calvert advanced to second and Willie Aguilar (2-for-4, RBI) scored the game's first run after an error on the throw by the center fielder. Ortiz followed that up with a 2RBI single to left field, giving the Chargers a 3-0 lead.

Cypress took control of the game with 3 more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Pierson Loska (2-for-3, 2RBI) roped an RBI single to right field, scoring Tyler Smith (0-for-3). Calvert hit an RBI double in the next at bat and would score on an error by the pitcher attempting to throw out a runner at second base.

The Chargers added 3 additional runs to their total and took a 9-0 lead into the ninth inning. Vaqueros catcher Zach Mausser was walked with the bases loaded to score Glendale's lone run of the game as Cypress went on to win 9-1.

Cypress baseball will return to action at home on Wednesday, Feb. 15 as they take on College of the Desert at 2:00 p.m.
