CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College baseball team (9-2) picked up a 2-1 victory over Long Beach City College (5-4) at home on Tuesday afternoon. The Chargers entered the game ranked No. 1 in Southern California, while the Vikings entered the day ranked No. 15.

Andrew Quezada (4-0) earned his fourth win of the season in as many starts for the Chargers. Quezada threw a complete game, as he scattered 4 hits over 9 innings while allowing just 1 run. Freshman Matt Schmidt (1-for-2, RBI) led the Chargers offense.

Cesar Gomez (0-1) received the loss for the Vikings, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs over four innings in his first start of the season.

The Chargers opened the scoring in the second inning after putting runners on first and second with 2 outs. Schmidt ripped a single into center field scoring Freshman Chase Sebby (1-for-3) to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. The Chargers would add a second run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead after Sebby scored on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Paul Gomez (0-for-3, RBI) laid down a bunt and Sebby was able to score from third as he just beat the throw to the plate.

The Vikings got one back in the fifth inning after Zach Martinez singled to drive in Collin Perez, but that was all the Vikings were able to do as the Chargers came away with the 2-1 victory.

Cypress baseball will return to action at home on Wednesday, Feb. 22 as they take on San Diego Mesa at 2:00 p.m.
