Women's Volleyball State Championship Preview

By Wes McCurtis

The Cypress College women's volleyball team (24-2) is headed to the CCCAA State Championship Tournament for the first time since 2010. The Chargers will open up against Fresno City (27-1) at LA Pierce College on Saturday, December 3 at 11:00 a.m. (LIVE STREAM)

The Chargers' road to state began with capturing their third Orange Empire Conference Championship in program history to cap off a dominant regular season. Cypress entered the postseason as the fifth seed in the south and went on to defeat No. 12 Canyons and No. 13 Moorpark at home in the Southern California Regionals. They enter this weekend's 8-team single-elimination tournament riding an 8 match win streak. The Chargers, led by OEC Coach of the Year Nancy Welliver and 2nd Team AVCA All-American Samantha Madrid, will look to bring home the first Women's Volleyball State Title to Cypress College in program history.

Fresno City capped off their regular season with a Central Valley Conference Championship before defeating No. 15 Foothill and No. 10 Feather River in the Northern California Regionals. The Rams' last State Tournament appearance came in 2012, where they finished 4th overall.

The winner of Cypress vs. Fresno will advance to Saturday's semi-final match against the winner of Grossmont vs. Gavilan at 5:00 p.m. The State Championship Final is scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 p.m. All games will take place at LA Pierce College in Woodland Hills, CA.
