Women's Volleyball Remains Unbeaten in Conference

By Wes McCurtis

CYPRESS, CA – The No. 8 Cypress College women's volleyball team (11-1, 4-0 OEC) swept through district rival Fullerton College (2-8, 0-4 OEC) in three games (25-12, 25-9, 25-15) at home on Wednesday night.

Sophomore Rockelle Gholson led the Chargers with 15 kills while hitting .556 for the match. Emily Witz and Samantha Martinez made their presence felt with 5 aces each, Martinez added 37 assists.

After honoring "The Voice" of the Chargers, Wyatt Ware, before his final home game, the Chargers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead over the Hornets in the first set. Fullerton was able to claw their way back into the game but the Chargers regained control and won the first set 25-12.

Cypress played their most dominant game of the season in the second set as Witz served up 11 straight points to open the game before the Hornets got on the board. The Chargers won set two 25-9 and would prove too tough a task for Fullerton, putting them away 25-15 in the third and final set.

The No. 8 Chargers remain atop the Orange Empire Conference standings and will look to stay undefeated in conference play this Friday when they travel to take on Orange Coast College at 6:00pm. Women's volleyball will return to action at home on Wednesday, October 5th against Santiago Canyon at 6:00pm.
