CYPRESS, CA- Cypress women's basketball (13-4, 1-0 OEC) defeated the Santa Ana Dons (5-10, 0-1 OEC) in their first conference win, 82-55.
In their first conference matchup of the year, Don Johnson Court was filled with home team fans. The Chargers performed well and never fell behind throughout the night in their dominant 27 point win.
From tip-off, Cypress had the momentum and out played the visiting team. As the Dons attempted to pass the rock back into play, the home team stole and scored on multiple occasions. In the first quarter alone, the Chargers stole the ball five times. Ashley Hawkins, Alexcia Alvarez and Jasmine Uy created chaos for the Santa Ana defense by scoring two layups in one second.
At half, Santa Ana remained within nine points as the Chargers led, 44-35. The Dons deficit only grew as Cypress separated and extended their lead throughout the third quarter. The home team led by 17 points going into the final frame. With two minutes left of regulation, the Chargers achieved a 30 point lead as time expired. Cypress finished out their dominant performance with a winning score of 82-55.
In their fourth consecutive win and first conference victory, the high scoring affair was shared amongst the whole team. Ashley Hawkins, recorded a triple double as she stated 20 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Second in scoring on the night was Alexcia Alvarez who scored 16 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Jasmine Uy found the basket for 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. The ballhawking squad managed to steal away the ball 18 times, accumulated 55 rebounds and selflessly assisted the ball 22 times.
In their near 30 point win, fans at Don Johnson Court expressed their appreciation for the impressive performance. The women's basketball team start conference play 1-0 after their win against Santa Ana and improved their season record to 13-4.
