Spring I Sports Reach the Finish Line

Spring I Sports Reach the Finish Line

CYPRESS, CA - The Chargers returned to action this season beginning on March 24th when women's basketball hosted Golden West College for the first Cypress athletic event in over a year. With no competition in the fall of 2020 the CCCAA ruled to create a Spring I and Spring II season. For Cypress Athletics, the Spring I season would consist of seven sports; men's and women's basketball, men's and women's water polo, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball. Each season was far from normal for each sport, but our coaches and staff were overjoyed to have an opportunity that allowed our student athletes to compete and return to competition to bring a glimpse of normalcy to their physical and mental health.

Men's Basketball

Men's basketball started their season with five scrimmages, four of which were back-to-backs against Santiago Canyon with the final scrimmage against Vanguard University. The Chargers men's basketball team were fortunate enough to add three games to end of the season that counted towards their overall record. Cypress finished 2-1 on the season after defeating Antelope Valley (87-69) and Palo Verde (88-53). Sebastian Castro was a standout during Cypress' match versus AVC playing a total of 33 minutes and scoring 31 points. Tommie Flanagan also played a tough game clocking 37 minutes of game time and putting up 16 points. During the Chargers match against Palo Verde, three players scored in double digits including Tommie Flanagan, Sam Rex, and Harrison Davis. Defensively, the Chargers held their own against their opponents with the help of sophomores Cade Flowers, Tommie Flanagan, and Sebastian Castro. Freshman, Ramiah Adedigba and Paul Head, were bright spots this season for the Chargers as they look to build towards the 2021 season.

Women's Basketball

The women's basketball team had the chance to apply their training and skills on the court through six scrimmages this season. The Chargers took on Golden West, Orange Coast, and Hope University and were excited to play together as a team after a year of no competition.  The women's team is looking forward to developing its fresh roster for next season including freshman stand-outs Malia Goldsmith and Jaylene Oviedo. Both guards showed massive scoring potential for the Chargers in the scrimmages this season. JoAnna Stroud showed the ability to rebound the basketball and stretch floor on the offesive end. Cypress has the potential to be one of the most exciting offenses in the state in 2021.

Men's Soccer

The men's soccer team took to the field for five exhibition matches against Golden West, Orange Coast, Santiago Canyon, and Bethesda University. Last season, the Chargers finished 10-5-6 overall with Coach Cristian Rus guiding the team during his first campaign as the head coach.
