Chargers Fall to Riverside 12-3

Cypress- The Cypress College women's water polo team (6-15, 0-5 OEC) remains winless in conference play after a 12-3 loss at home to Riverside (16-2, 4-0 OEC) on Wednesday afternoon. 

The Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over the Chargers with a goal from Kelly Geurts and two goals from Mary Myers. Jaqueline Godinez extended the lead to 4-0 from close range at the end of the first period. 

Sarina Briseno began the second period with an early goal to make it a 5-0 game. Cypress driver, Ariel Burns, found the back of the net to put the Chargers on the board, to make it 5-1. However, Mary Myers and Jaqueline Godinez added a goal each to the Tigers tally to end the half. 

Trailing 7-1 to start the second half, the Chargers picked it up defensively to force three straight Tiger turnovers.  Cypress was able to capitalize as Emilee Yates put in a backhand goal to make it 7-2. Citlali Salazar would essentially put the game away for the Tigers with back-to-back goals to end the third period. 

Jaclyn Meyers, Citlali Salazar, and Jaqueline Godinez would each score an additional goal in the final period. Casey Burke added a goal to the Chargers tally with seconds left on a lob shot and the Chargers would go on to lose 12-3.

Cypress will jump right back into action at the Battle of The Beach tournament this Friday and Saturday. The Chargers will open up the tournament against Chaffey College at Long Beach City College. Game time is 11:30am.
