Gauchos Defeat Chargers in Thriller

Cypress- The Chargers (3-7, 0-2) took a tough loss against Saddleback College (3-3, 1-1) on Wednesday afternoon as the Gauchos came out on top 7-5. It was a close game as both teams saw their fair share of clean looks while two players were shown the red flag.

Cypress College looked in control of the first half as the team played several crisp passes and had decent shots at goal while goalie Becca Stephenson made key blocks to preserve the cleansheet. It wasn't until 4:59 left in the quarter when sophomore Casey Burke opened up the scoring but the Gauchos came back less than two minutes later when Mikayla Kosmala scored the equalizer. With 44 seconds left in the quarter, the Chargers took a 2-1 lead thanks to a Burke shot at close range.

The Chargers extended their lead to 3-1 twenty seconds into the second quarter as Sophomore Kiley Kendal found the back of the net. The game was stagnate for a couple minutes until Sydney Smith of Saddleback brought the Gauchos within one with 4:08 left in the second quarter. With 44 seconds left in the half, Kosmala tied the game at three apiece.

The Gauchos continued their momentum in the second half as their defense stagnated the Chargers offense while scoring goals at the 5:17 and 2:41 mark. More bad news piled on Cypress as freshman Miranda Hernandez was called for her third exclusion, taking her out of the game. The Gauchos added one more goal at the 1:57 mark to take a commanding 6-3 lead before freshman Ariel Burns scored at the buzzer to keep the Chargers within 2.

With 1:48 left in the final quarter, the Chargers scored to make it 6-5 thanks to a goal by Jordana Rahm. With time winding down, Cypress utilized full pressure but the Gauchos slipped through and scored an insurance goal with 13 seconds left.

The Chargers will return to action at the Mount San Antonio College Tournament this weekend (September 25-26). Times and opponents will be announced shortly.
