Chargers Drop Conference Opener to Pirates

CYPRESS, CA -Cypress men's water polo (3-2, 0-1 OEC) dropped their first conference appearance to the Orange Coast Pirates (3-3, 1-0 OEC) on Wednesday afternoon. 

Both squads began the match fast and constantly fought for possession. In the close conference face off, Cypress held a 7-6 lead as the match headed into halftime. Nearly two minutes into the second half, the Pirates reclaimed the lead at 7-8. As the third quarter continued, Orange Coast separated themselves with a five goal advantage. 

The game entered the final eight minutes with Cypress down 9-13. The home team took an aggressive approach in the last quarter and was able to keep the deficit to three. With shots from the Chargers ricocheting off of the crossbars, the Pirates fended off the Cypress offense to drain the clock. Cypress was met with their first conference loss of the season, 15-12. 

Diego Roman led the team in scoring with his four goals and a steal. Porter Rosenlof scored three goals, recorded two assists and stole the ball four times. Gabe Zamora defended the net with his six saves off of strong Pirate attacks.

UP NEXT: The Chargers will travel to Mt. San Antonio College for the Mt. Sac Invitational on Friday, September 15th. Cypress will face off against Crafton Hills at 9:45am.
