Men's Soccer Defeats Moorpark In Home Opener

By Wes McCurtis

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College men's soccer team (1-1-0) bounced back with a 2-0 victory over Moorpark College (0-1-1) in their home opener at Ray Haas Field on Tuesday.

The Chargers dominated time of possession and their speed kept the Raider defense on their heels for most of the game. Cypress managed to take 15 shots including 12 shots on goal while holding Moorpark to only 4 shots.

The Chargers had plenty of opportunities to take a lead into halftime but were held scoreless thanks to five saves by Raiders keeper Jose Zepeda. Cypress continued their aggressive play in the second half and were rewarded with a penalty kick after sophomore Hawe Yonas was fouled in the box. Yonas found the back of the net (52:37) to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead and momentum.

The Raiders attempted to make a late push but Cypress capitalized on the counter attack when Jose Morales launched a beautiful pass to Israel Celis who got it by the keeper (87:17) and put the game out of reach.

Men's Soccer will return to action at home on Friday, September 2 against College of the Canyons at 3:00pm.
