All Signs Point to Trevor Hoffman's National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction

Trevor Hoffman is widely regarded as one of the top relievers to take the mound in Major League Baseball history. In his 3rd year on the ballot, Hoffman is expected to be the first former Charger inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY when the BBWAA announces results of the 2018 Hall of Fame balloting on Wednesday, January 24. After falling just five votes short of 2017 induction, Hoffman is polling at 78 percent, which clears the 75 percent needed for election, according to Ryan Thibodaux's public ballot tracker. All electees will be inducted on Sunday, July 29.

Hoffman began his journey to baseball superstardom as a shortstop at Savanna High School in Anaheim, CA. He decided to develop his game as a Cypress College student-athlete under Head Coach Scott Pickler. Hoffman played for the Chargers from 1985-1986, before transferring to play at the University of Arizona. After a successful college career, the Cincinnati Reds selected him in the 11th round of the 1989 MLB Draft and the rest is history.

Hoffman, who earned 601 saves during his MLB career, is one of nearly two dozen Chargers who have gone on to play Major League Baseball. He retired following the 2010 season as the all-time leader in saves, a mark that was later passed by Mariano Rivera.

During his 18-year MLB career, Hoffman was selected seven-time MLB All-Star selection, two-time Reliever of the Year, and two-time runner-up for the National League Cy Young Award. He retired with Major League Baseball records of fifteen 20-save seasons, fourteen 30-save seasons, and nine 40-save seasons. He also retired with the highest career strikeout rate of any reliever. In addition, he was the first player to reach the 500 and 600-save milestones and was the all-time saves leader from 2006 to 2011. The San Diego Padres retired his #51 jersey in 2011.
