Chargers Suffer Narrow Defeat in Exhibition against Westcliff, 17-14

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress Chargers men's water polo team (7-7-1, 0-4 OEC) hosted Westcliff University (5-19) this afternoon, losing 17-14. The Chargers were led by Cameron Davidson, who finished with six goals and three assists. Justin Wakefield had three goals to go along with one assist, while goalkeeper Minsoo Park finished the afternoon with seven steals.  

Though the game was high scoring, the first quarter ended in a tie at one goal a piece. The defense was strong for both sides and goalkeeper Minsoo Park had a couple of nice saves in the first half to keep the opposing offense at bay. Justin Wakefield scored a beautiful goal from deep to keep the Chargers within one, 3-4, as they headed into halftime. Both teams came out aggressively in the third quarter, trading goals all the way through. The Chargers were moving the ball around, as four different players scored in the third quarter alone. A goal from Brian Hunyh gave the Chargers the lead to finish the quarter, 9-8. As the fourth quarter began, both teams tightened up their defense and increased the physical play. A strong goal from John Howard Zeff put the Chargers ahead, but Westcliff were quick to respond, regaining their lead 11-10. Sawyer Nering set up teammate Justin Wakefield with a beautiful pass to tie the score at 11 with three minutes to go in the game. Though there were multiple chances from both sides, neither team would score again, sending the game into overtime. As overtime got underway, Westcliff jumped out to a two-goal lead, and Cypress was unable to to battle back. Though a couple of nice goals from Cameron Davidson kept the Chargers around, the Westcliff maintained their lead, and the game ended with a score of 17-14.
