Chargers Split (1-1) in Orange Empire Conference Opener

Huntington Beach, CA – The Cypress College beach volleyball team (2-2, 1-1 OEC) hosted their first match in school history on Friday morning to open Orange Empire Conference play. The Chargers went 1-1 on the day, losing their first match against Fullerton College 4-1 followed by a 5-0 sweep over Riverside.

Ivana Escobar and Madison May, the Chargers' No. 3 pair, were the only duo to win both of their Friday matches. Escobar/May dominated Fullerton's Mallori Koci and Alex Smith, winning in two sets (21-16, 21-13). They followed that up with a comeback win over Riverside's Amanda Barker and Yaneli Fernandez (17-21, 21-11, 16-14).

Cypress' No.1 pair, Cierra Boaz and Susan Suski, had a strong showing for the Chargers. Boaz/Suski put up a strong fight against Fullerton's Charity Dennis and Suzie Duarte but would ultimately come up short in two sets (23-21, 21-17). However, they found a way to bounce back in tough match against Riverside's Marissa Vialpando and Sabrina Gonzaga (21-17, 15-21, 15-9).

Beach Volleyball will resume Orange Empire Conference play on Friday, March 18 at Irvine Valley College. The Chargers will take on Irvine Valley at 10:00 am followed by Santa Ana at 12:00 pm.
