Cypress Women’s Volleyball Begins 2023 Campaign with Back-to-Back Wins

CYPRESS, CA - Cypress women's volleyball began the 2023 season with two wins at Pasadena City College against Mt. San Jacinto and Pasadena City.

Led by newly named Head Coach, Danko Iordanov, the team collected their first two victories of the season. Iordanov has been with the Chargers since 2022 as an assistant coach for women's beach volleyball and earned the Head Coach position for indoor ahead of the 2023 season.

For the team's first matchup of the year, Cypress swept Mt. San Jacinto. Returning First Team All-Orange Empire Conference outside hitter, Shayna Martinez, made her impact known with her 18 kills and 12 digs. At 6'6 ft, freshman Zoe Ziegler tallied 11 kills of her own to contribute to the set sweep. Sophomore Victoria Reza was a playmaker against the Eagles with 26 assists.

In the second game of the double-header day, the Chargers pushed past Pasadena City College. Libero Ashlyn Riddle recorded six service aces and 20 digs to prevent the pursuing Lancer attacks. The returning sophmores Bethany Ma'ae, Larissa Samano, Kaelyn Arnold and Kaitlyn Emma Casino helped Cypress defeat the Lancers for the first time since 2018. After the two wins, Martinez was awarded CCCWVCA State Players of the Week #1.

The Chargers are coming off of a 2022 season in which they competed in the second round of the 3C2A playoff bracket. Cypress earned a bye for the first round but fell to Orange Coast in the Regional Semifinals that ended their season. Looking to improve their 17-10 overall and 9-7 conference record, first-year Chargers Head Coach Iordanov comes in with decades of experience. With All-OEC selections returning and new members added to the 2023 roster, Cypress is looking to bounce back for a tenth consecutive 3C2A postseason appearance.

UP NEXT: Chargers women's volleyball continue their season with their third matchup on Friday, September 1st. The team will travel to LA Mission College to compete against LA Pierce at 10AM.
