Women's Basketball Season Preview

The Cypress College women's basketball team will begin their season tonight on the road against Moorpark College at 5:00 pm. The Chargers posted a 23-8 record with a second place finish in the OEC and a round two regional playoff appearance last season. With only one returning player, Cypress will rely heavily on contributions from their freshman stacked roster this season.

"I'm excited! We're really young and they set some high goals for themselves on our team bonding trip up in Big Bear," said Coach Mohr. "I think we've got enough weapons where we can really do some damage. How quickly we mature and grow will really be the key."

With only three players standing over 5'8, Cypress is fielding a much smaller lineup this season. "We can play a lot of ways, but I think it's to our advantage to play an up-tempo in your face style because we do have some quickness and speed," said Coach Mohr.

Sophomore Erika Nilsen and freshman Ashley Veloso will play a huge role as team captains for the Chargers. Nilsen is coming off a freshman season where she averaged 7.2 PPG and 4.2 RPG in 28 starts for the Chargers. "She [Erika Nilsen] is hugely important. She's one of those players that walks the walk and talks the talk…We hope she has a breakout season because she is deserving of one."

Before every season the women's basketball team selects a word to embody their on-court performance; this year's squad selected the word "Relentless". "We need to be relentless and work super hard on and off the court to be the best team we can be," said Erika Nilsen.

Despite their inexperience, the women's basketball team is looking to make a run at an Orange Empire Conference Title guided by an exciting style of play and relentless effort.
