Baseball: Cypress ends Mounties' season with first-round upset

(Walnut, CA) No. 11 Cypress College (23-20) took two out of three against No. 6 Mt. San Antonio (33-10) in the opening round of the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional tournament to advance to the second round.

In the opening game on Friday, May 6, the Chargers dealt the Mounties a 5-4 setback. Mt. SAC bounced back in Game 2 on Saturday with a 10-8 victory to force a third and decisive game. Cypress clinched the series with a 15-9 win in Game 3, thus ending the Mounties' season.

Game 1

Trailing 4-3 through five, Cypress tallied two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead, which proved to be enough for the win.

Top hitters for Mt. SAC included Art Ruiz (3-5, R, 2 RBI, HR) and Elijah Pelayo (2-5). Blake Borgogno, Alex Reynozo, and Pelayo each stole a base for the Mounties.

Starter Michael Flores (11-2) got the loss, throwing 5.2 innings, allowing five runs (three earned), and striking out six.

Game 2

Tied 6-6 through six, Mt. SAC scored three in the top of the seventh, then added another in the top of the eighth, to secure a 10-8 win.

Ruiz (2-3, R), Damien Delgadillo (2-3, R, RBI), CJ Ontiveros (2-4, R, 2 RBI), and Pelayo (1-4, R. 2 RBI, 3B) helped lead Mt. SAC's offense. Will Bermudez, Pelayo, and Nin Burns II (2) accounted for the Mounties' stolen bases.

Reliever Damian Torres (3-1) picked up the victory, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing three runs (two earned). Starter Jeffery Isenhart threw 3.2 innings, allowed four runs (three earned), and struck out one.

Game 3

Cypress broke open a 6-6 tie with six runs in the top of the eighth to take a 12-6 lead. Mt. SAC responded with three in the bottom half of the inning, then the Chargers tacked on three more in the ninth to claim a 15-9 victory.

Top Mountie hitters for the game included Cristian Enriquez (3-4, RBI) and Brent Cota (2-5, 2 R, 4 RBI, HR), Delgadillo (2-4, RBI). Ontiveros and Jacob Moreno picked up stolen bases in the losing effort.

Enriquez (0-3) got the loss, throwing 0.2 innings in relief of starter Brian Park (6 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 5 SO).

Thus concludes Mt. SAC's 2022 campaign. Thanks go out to all fans and supporters. We'll see you again in 2023.
