Hawks Sweep Season Series Against Cypress
The Santiago Canyon College women's soccer team entered into its final meeting against the Cypress College Chargers on Friday afternoon riding a three-game winning streak. With both teams sitting neck and neck in the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) standings, the Hawks were able to solidify their position ahead of the Chargers in the conference following a strong 2-0 win.
There were minimal opportunities on the offensive end for both teams, but the Santiago Canyon defensive unit consisting of sophomore Kierra Hanna, freshman Brisa Mariscal, freshman Jordyn Lamastra and sophomore Elyse Valenzuela made things challenging for a talented Cypress front.
The four-headed monster on the backline limited Cypress to a mere one shot on goal in the first half and just six shots throughout the entire match.
Santiago Canyon was able to punch through their first score of the game compliments of an own goal in the 24th minute off a corner kick from Lamastra. The battered serve eventually shot past the Cypress goalkeeper following a mess of Hawks weapons making it nearly impossible for a clear.
After taking a one score lead into halftime, the Hawks were able to add to their lead compliments of a thunderous strike from freshman forward Alyssa Marino. Moreno, who now leads SCC in scoring (11) and overall points (22), drove a ball past the outstretch Cypress goalkeeper just outside of the box in the 57th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Krystal Maxey (6-1-1) earned her first start since mid-October and performed at a high level. She managed the game well leading to three saves and the victory. Additionally, she recorded her first shutout win of the year.
SCC recorded nine shots with five landing on target. Sophomore midfielder Jordan Salinas uncorked a team-high four shots, while freshman forward Samantha Aguila and Marino hammered off two tries. A shot each from Salinas and Aguila missed high by a inches. Freshman forward Rayleen Chairez tried her foot once as well.
