CYPRESS, CA- Cypress Women's Water Polo opened their season 3-1 in the Charger Invitational over Labor Day weekend.
The Chargers hosted the East Los Angeles Huskies, San Diego Mesa Olympians, Santa Monica Corsairs, and the Palomar Comets in a 2-day event on Labor Day weekend.
The team got off to a great start with an 18-6 victory over ELAC. Brooke Shiohama scored the opening goal early in the first quarter from an assist by Hailee Pike. The Chargers continued their momentum and kept the Huskies scoreless in the entire first half, 8-0.
Going into the third quarter, the Huskies found the back of the net and scored their first points of the match. Cypress did not let up, and continued to take advantage of ELAC's mistakes to take their first win of the season, 18-6.
Cypress women's water polo moved on to compete against SD Mesa for their second game of the mini tournament. The Olympians are coming off of a 15-9 overall record in their 2022 season. The Chargers battled throughout most of the game and held the Olympians by three points going into the last quarter. Unfortunately, Cypress was unable to execute and lost their first game in the tournament, 16-9.
On day two of the Charger Invite, the team came into game three with a 1-1 record. The Chargers seeked to bounce back from their loss against SD Mesa College in their game against the Santa Monica Corsairs. Freshman, Karly Lepel, kicked off the game with a quick goal in the first 10 seconds (7:50, 1Q) and the rest of the team put up nine more goals in the first quarter. The Chargers defeated SMC 14-4 and were up against Palomar college in their fourth and final game of the tournament.
The Palomar Comets defeated the SD Mesa Olympians at the PCAC Conference Tournament Championship in their 2022 season. Cypress had outscored the Comets, 10-1 in the first half and finished the game with a 17-6 victory. Jezebell Cervantes and Brooke Shiohama were the scoring, assist, and steal leaders of the game. Goalkeeper, Megan Lundquist had four saves, two steals, and one assist. The Chargers were undefeated in day two of the tournament and ended the weekend 3-1 overall.
