Water Polo Goes 2-0 in Santa Monica Mini Tournament

CYPRESS, CA- Water Polo went 2-0 on Friday at the Santa Monica College mini tournament. Two Chargers earned a season-high record during the tournament. 

Cypress women's water polo (6-8, 0-4 OEC) vs Rio Hondo College (2-15, 0-5 Conference)

The Chargers faced Rio Hondo College for their first game in the tournament. Cypress left the Road Runners scoreless after the first quarter and defeated Rio Hondo, 17-5. 

Jezebell Cervantes led the Chargers with 6 goals, 1 assist, and 7 steals.

Hanah Salazar followed with 4 goals, 2 assists and 2 steals and Makayla Serrano with 3 goals, 2 assists and 2 steals. 

 

Cypress women's water polo (6-8, 0-4 OEC) vs East LA College (0-13, 0-5 Conference)

After the victory over Rio Hondo College, Cypress continued to dominate in the tournament. The Chargers got out to an early lead against the Huskies in the first quarter, 9-5.

Cypress held the Huskies at 5 points for the remainder of the game and won their final game of the tournament, 24-5. 

Jezebell Cervantes scored a season-high of 7 goals and 5 assists.

Hanah Salazar contributed 6 goals and 1 assist of her own, while goalie Maggie McFadin collected 12 saves overall in the tournament. 

 

Cypress men's water polo (10-6, 1-3 OEC) vs Ventura College (0-14, 0-2 Conference)

The Chargers opened the tournament with a victory over the Ventura College Pirates, 18-4.

In the first quarter, the match was tied 4-4. Then, Cypress outscored the Pirates 14-0 for the remainder of the game.

The Chargers totaled 15 steals defensively and goal keepers, Otto Nash (3 saves) and Ognjen Cerkez (9 saves) totaled 12 saves in the match. 

Martin Gonzalez (5 goals, 1 assist), Brandon Rubio (3 goals, 1 steal), John Howard Zeff (3 goals, 1 steal) led the Chargers offensively.

 

Cypress men's water polo (10-6, 1-3 OEC) vs El Camino College (13-11, 1-2 Conference)

In the second match of the tournament, the Chargers went up against the El Camino Warriors.

Aydann Hambruch led the Chargers with a season-high of 7 goals and John Howard Zeff added 5 goals to the Charger victory, 18-9.

The Chargers accummalted 10 assists and 9 steals in the match. Goal keepers, Otto Nash (7 saves) and Ognjen Cerkez (1 save) rallied 8 steals total. 

 

UP NEXT: Men's water polo will host the Grossmont College Griffins on Thursday, October 20th. Match will begin at 7:00PM.

Women's water polo will compete in the Battle of the Beach tournament. First match will be on Friday, October 21st.
