Chargers Stay Undefeated in Win Over El Camino

CYPRESS, CA- Cypress women's volleyball (7-0) delivered their seventh consecutive win over the El Camino Warriors (0-7) in a match sweep, 3-0.

In the first set, Cypress set the tone early with multiple point saving digs and impressive net play. Opposite hitter, Zoe Ziegler, defended the net and prevented the impending Warriors strikes. From the service line, Libero Ashyln Riddle was dominant as she recorded a total of four service aces. Then, the Chargers went on to win the first set, 25-8.

El Camino kept up with the Chargers throughout the second set as the Warriors took their first lead of the night, 13-14. A timeout from Cypress Head Coach Danko Iordanov shifted the momentum of the game back to the home team's side. The Chargers overcame the small deficit but the Warriors did not slow down their approach. The two teams stayed within a point of each other until Cypress kept the Warriors at 21 points. A dramatic set point flew over the Warriors squad to land just inside the line to end the second set, 25-21.

Though Cypress was down early in the third set, strong strikes from Shayna Martinez deflected off the Warriors defense to keep the Chargers close. El Camino continued to battle the undefeated Chargers midway through the final set. Cypress's offense proved to be too much for El Camino near the end as the home team managed to separate themselves. After struggling to end the match sweep, an Andrea Briseno kill finished off the third set for the win, 25-18.

Martinez led the team in kills with ten as Zielger followed with six. Riddle recorded the most service aces with four and was second on the team with her nine digs. Hailey Church's 23 assists was the most while Kiana Salamone's 15 assists was second. Rylee McFarlane had the only other service ace and also recorded four digs and an assist. With the win, Cypress has earned their seventh consecutive victory and fourth match sweep to kick off the 2023 season.

UP NEXT: The Chargers will be back on the road for a double-header at San Diego Mesa on Saturday, September 9th. Cypress will play San Diego Mesa at 10am and Canyons at 1pm.
