Sophomores Show-Out with a Shutout

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's soccer team (13-4-2, 8-3-1 OEC) defeated Golden West College (4-12-2, 2-9-1 OEC) with an 8-0 shutout.

The Golden West Rustlers had an early opportunity to take the lead when Olivia Villalba shot the ball at the Chargers. The ball hit the left post and Cypress was able to recover right away. The Chargers took the ball up the field towards the Rustlers defensive line and earned a corner kick attempt. Megan Alcantara at the corner, kicked the ball to the center of the box where the Chargers came swarming in. The ball bounced around and found the back of the net as Janae Kayser scored the first goal of the game, 1-0. The Rustlers tried to respond, however they were unable to score against the Cypress keeper, Sofia Lopez

The Chargers continued to attack aggressively and scored another goal by Itzel Ramirez who received a beautiful pass from Crystal Moreno. Then, Abigail Morales was off to the races as she carried the ball center field with a defender on her hip. Morales juked the Rustler's keeper and scored the Chargers third goal of the game. Cypress kept the charge going offensively when Carisia Raygoza scored the fourth and final goal of the half from a shot attempt by Celine Gehrig that bounced off of the Rustler's goalie.

Raygoza opened the second half with another goal for the Chargers to extend the lead 5-0. Soon after, there was a foul right outside the box and Jasmin Martinez was called to take the kick. The Rustlers keeper set up the wall, yet it was unmatched for the Chargers midfielder. Martinez bypassed the Rustlers wall and the ball went straight into the net.The Chargers managed to continue their momentum with Melanie Hernandez off the bench as she added the seventh goal from a ricochet ball off the goalkeeper.
