Chargers Dominate in Home Opener, 6-2

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress College women's soccer team (3-0) hosted their first home match of the season against College of the Desert (2-2). The Chargers came out victorious after their offense propelled them to a 6-2 victory. 

Forward, Brianna Cortez, was the star of the day for the Chargers finishing with a hat trick (three goals) and two assists. Anahi Diaz, Alyssa Villalobos, and Brianna Rodriguez each scored a goal of their own. Sylvia Quintero, Lucia Yanez, and Anahi Diaz each notched an assist as the Cypress offense controlled the game. Captain, Ashley Murguia, netted a beautiful free kick for College of the Desert in the second half to bring the game within one.  

The Chargers got out to a comfortable lead early with a goal in the fifth minute when Brianna Cortez scored the first goal of the game. Cortez stayed on the offensive attack in the ninth minute when she crossed the ball through the eighteen where it was finished by Alyssa Villalobos to make the score 2-0. The third Cypress goal of the game came on a defensive attack from Anahi Diaz when she played a through ball to Briana Cortez. Cortez (18') beat the goalie on the one-on-one attack to give Cypress a strong 3-0 lead. Desert would get on the board late in the second with a goal (32') by Citlalli Ponce. The Road Runners would inch closer with a free kick in the 53rd minute to put the pressure back on Cypress. The Chargers answered the call with three goals in the final 30 minutes to claim a 6-2 victory. 

UP NEXT: The Chargers (3-0) will be back on the road Friday, September 10, to face the another undefeated team, the Foothill Owls (4-0). The game will kickoff at 1:30pm.
