Cypress at the Buzzer Over Fullerton, 64-62

CYPRESS, CA - Cypress women's basketball (5-10, 1-0 OEC) defeated the Fullerton Hornets (9-6, 0-1 OEC) at the buzzer, 64-62.

The Chargers hosted the Hornets for the opening match of the Orange Empire Conference. The two teams met in non-conference play at the LA Valley Tournament where Fullerton pulled away with a two-point win, 74-72.

Cypress trailed behind Fullerton at the start of the game as the Hornets led 17-9 at the end of the first quarter. The full court pressure was on both ends of the court as each team battled for possession. Halfway through the second quarter, the Chargers began to make a comeback with two made free throws by Kylah Sagale. Sagale's free throws gave the team their first lead of the night, 21-20. Although, the Hornets did not let up and forced their way back ahead as they finished the half, 33-25. 

In the third quarter, Jolie Johnson and Journie Hayden kept the team in the game with 7-points a piece. The Hornets led at the end of the quarter 50-47. However, the Chargers were able to outscore the Hornets 22-17 in the third.   

In the final minutes of the game, the Chargers were trailing behind the Hornets 62-60. Hayden attacked the paint and dished the ball out to Johnson at the short corner for the jumper to tie the game 62-62 with a minute left. Fullerton with possession at four seconds, tried to shoot behind the arc and missed. Hayden grabbed the rebound and the Chargers called a time out to advance the ball at half court. Emily Carabajal at the inbound, found Johnson down at the block for the last shot. Johnson spun on her defender and hit the game-winner at the buzzer, 64-62.

 

Cypress stat leaders: Journie Hayden - 17 points, 13 rebounds and Jolie Johnson - 21 points, 11 rebounds.
