Chargers Defeat MiraCosta in Home Opener

CYPRESS, CA - Cypress women's basketball (1-3) defeated the MiraCosta Spartans (1-3) in overtime, 69-58.

The Chargers hosted MiraCosta College for their first home game of the season. Cypress led the Spartans 14-4 to start the game and kept a consistent 10-point lead throughout the first half. 

At the half, the Chargers kept the lead going as Journie Hayden knocked down a jumper late in the third quarter to put the team ahead by 11 points. 

In the fourth quarter with six minutes remaining, MiraCosta scored in the paint to shrink the Chargers lead by five (50-45). The Spartans crept their way back in the game to take their first lead, 51-50 at four minutes. MiraCosta hit back-to-back three-pointers to extend the lead 54-50. In the final minute of the game, the Spartans turned the ball over to Dorothy Schwenck on Cypress who made a quick three-point shot that shrunk MiraCosta's lead 56-55. The Chargers with possession, gave the ball to Jolie Johnson for the layup and she was fouled in the paint. Johnson was sent to the line for two shots, she made the first basket (56-56), but missed the second to win the game. MiraCosta grabbed the rebound and attempted a shot at halfcourt before the buzzer went off. 

The Chargers forced five extra minutes of overtime and was able to pick up their momentum with 11 straight points made. Cypress held MiraCosta to a scoreless overtime period and won their first game of the season, 69-58.
