Two Chargers Commit to Four-Year Programs

CYPRESS, CA- Cypress women's basketball sees two athletes commit to a Division 1 and NAIA basketball program.

The Chargers women's basketball team has seen two members of their 2022-2023 squad move onto a four-year program. Ashley Hawkins has committed to Gardner-Webb University and Alexcia Alvarez will be attending Indiana University Northwest in the fall. The two starters led the team to second place in the Orange Empire Conference and to an Elite 8 state tournament appearance.

Ashley Hawkins

Hawkins had a historic year for the Cypress Women's basketball program. She was named MVP for OEC, Best Offensive Player of the Year and awarded First Team All State. Hawkins found herself atop multiple Chargers single season records. She landed first in field goals attempted, second in points scored and third in free throws made. Hawkins also cracked the top ten in free throws attempted, free throw percentage and fourth in field goals made. At the end of her Chargers days, she finished second in career records for scoring average with 23.1 points. Hawkins made her impact on Don Johnson Court and Cypress is excited to see her advance to a Division 1 basketball program at GWU.

Alexcia Alvarez

Alvarez was the heart of the squad as she helped push the team to a state appearance. From preseason to the teams final game at Golden Eagle Arena, the guard's presence was known. Alvarez was named to the All-OEC Second Team for her impressive season performance. She finished fourth in the OEC rankings for field goal percentage with her 46.1%. Alvarez also landed top three in the Chargers 2023 statistics. Her energy and leadership lifted the team in postseason wins over the Ventura Pirates and Moorpark Raiders. Cypress Women's basketball is proud to see Alvarez continue her athletic and academic career at Indiana University Northwest.
