Orange Coast Defeats Cypress at the Buzzer, 71-69

CYPRESS, CA- Women's basketball (14-10, 6-3 OEC) hosted the Orange Coast Pirates (16-7, 5-2 OEC) on Wednesday night for their second match of the season. The Chargers and Pirates went down to the wire, but it was Orange Coast who made the final basket with one second to go and propel them to victory, 71-69. 

Malia Goldsmith led the way with 20 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals as she filled up the stat sheet. Jaylene Oviedo scored 17 points shooting 5-10 from three-point range. Alexcia Alvarez was a stud on defense as she came up with 6 steals to go along with her 8 points. Annie Trinh (17 points), Karina Cabrera (15 points), Alexis Legan (14 points) and Donyea Smith (13 points) all reached double figures for Orange Coast as their offense attack was potent all game. 

A high scoring first quarter closed with the Chargers leading 20-18. Alexcia Alvarez scored seven points in the quarter while Jaylene Oviedo started hot sinking three three-pointers for the Chargers. The Pirates answered the Cypress scoring attack, but they still trailed by three points going into halftime, 35-32. Coast came to play on offense in the second half scoring 21 points and shooting 57% from the field in the third quarter.

With 23 seconds to play the Chargers had the ball trailing by three. Jaylene Oviedo came up huge for Cypress sinking a three off a pass from Tanya Carbajal. With no timeouts remaining, the Pirates came down the court looking to break the tie. Annie Trinh drove to her right and sunk a floating jump shot with one second remaining on the clock. Orange Coast snuck away with a huge OEC victory, 71-69. 

UP NEXT: Cypress hits the road for a three game stretch beginning Friday, February 11th, at Santa Ana College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm.
