Cypress Stuns Hornets on the Road, 78-66

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress women's basketball team (10-8, 3-1 OEC) traveled to face the Fullerton Hornets (8-9, 1-1 OEC) in their first match-up this season. Cypress came out victorious earning a 78-66 win, their third conference win of the young season.

The Chargers were led by Malia Goldsmith and Jaylene Oviedo who finished with 23 points apiece. The dynamic duo combined for 10 three-pointers, seven of which were sunk by Oviedo. Alexcia Alvarez cleaned the glass with 9 rebounds on the night and Tanya Carbajal came off the bench to add 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

Oviedo scored her season-high last night and it was her stellar 3-point shooting that kept the Chargers on top throughout the game. Late in the second quarter Cypress was able to pull away from the Hornets after a tip-in at the buzzer by Taylaquay Marshall giving the Chargers a seven point halftime lead.

A three-pointer from Jaylene Oviedo extended the Cypress lead to 13 with just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter. Defensively, the Chargers stepped up, allowing only seven Fullerton points in the entire quarter. The Hornets did not go down without a fight outscoring Cypress 17-7 in the fourth quarter. The Chargers were able to cling to their early lead and finish victorious, 78-66.
