Cypress Draws Sierra College in Game One of State Tournament

BAKERSFIELD, CA- Cypress softball will begin their run at their 10th CCCAA State Championship on Thursday, May 19th. The Chargers earned the #2 seed in the south drawing the #3 seed Sierra Wolverines from the north in game one of the tournament. Cypress and Sierra will play the first game of the State Tournament at 11am with game two scheduled for 11am on Friday despite the outcome of game one. 

The Chargers and Wolverines have matched up five times in their schools history. Sierra has the upperhand with a 3-2 record, winning the last matchup 7-4 on May 17th, 2018. After losing to the Wolverines in round one of 2018, Cypress went on to win three straight games in the State Tournament before ultimately falling to Palomar in the State Championship Semi-Final. The Chargers last win over Sierra College came in round one of the 2012 State Championship where Cypress won in a high scoring affair 9-7. The Chargers would go on to win the State Championship in 2012 defeating Siskiyous 4-3.

Sierra and Cypress matchup pretty evenly when it comes to the CCCAA All-State statistics. Beginning with the offense, Cypress was #10 in runs scored (284) trailing Sierra who was #6 with 306 runs scored. The Chargers were #6 in hits (417) and #5 in triples (21) where the Wolverines finished #8 with 401 hits. Both teams were neck and neck in the RBI category with 244 for Sierra (#12) and 239 for #13 Cypress. Sierra has also stolen bases at a frequent rate, swiping 94 bases on the season ranking #5 in California. 

On the defensive side, nobody has pitched more innings than the Cypress who finished with 330.0 IP compared to Sierra's 271.1 IP. The Wolverines ranked in the top 10 with 225 strikeouts and both teams ranked in the top 15 of team ERA, Sierra (1.68) and Cypress (2.40). 

All games will be played at Bakersfield College, except Games 5 and 6 which will be played at North High School. Please refer to the CCCAA 2022 State Championship Fact Sheet if you have any questions.
