Chargers hand Santiago Canyon first OEC loss of the season, 79-70

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress men's basketball team (12-6, 4-2 OEC) defeated the Santiago Canyon Hawks (14-2, 4-1 OEC), 79-70 to hand them their first OEC loss of the season.

This was the Chargers first home game since December 22nd and their first ever victory over Santiago Canyon College. Cypress was led in scoring by Grant Sii who finished with 20 points, going 4 for 7 from behind the arc. Tommie Flanagan shined for the Chargers as well, finishing with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Trent Goldmann rounded out the scoring with 17 points and going 7-7 from the free throw line.

The Chargers were the first to score behind a three-pointer from Trent Goldmann in the opening minute. The Santiago Hawks were efficient in their fast break play, scoring quickly on multiple possessions. However, the Chargers sharp-shooting in the first half gave them the advantage and were able to take an eight point lead after a jump shot from Grant Sii, 27-19. This led to a Santiago timeout, which seemed to ignite the team, going on a 14-3 run and ending the half with a two-point lead, 38-26.

The second half went back and forth as both teams fought to put themselves ahead. It wasn't until the 10-minute mark when Cypress took their first lead of the half after a three-pointer from Tommie Flanagan, 55-54. From there, the Chargers were able to hold on defensively and a big three from Trent Goldmann sealed the deal with one minute remaining. Cypress went on to win, 79-70, their fourth straight victory.

UP NEXT: The Chargers hit the road to take on first place Fullerton College on Friday, January 28. Tip-off will be at 6PM; fans are welcome with mask, proof of vaccination, or proof of a negative test within 72 hours of the event.
