Cypress Takes Two of Three Against Mt. Sac

Cypress Takes Two of Three Against Mt. Sac

CYPRESS, CA- Chargers baseball (3-2, 0-0 OEC) defeated the visiting Mt. Sac Mounties (4-3, 0-0 SCC) on Tuesday, 7-2.

The two teams met on Friday and began a three game series. The Mounties hosted the first two matchups in which they won the first game 21-5 and the Chargers took Saturday's game 6-4. The third and final meeting was at Cypress College as the home team looked to take the series win.

In the first two frames each team made mistakes leading to runs for both lineups. To start the game, the Cypress infield struggled to create outs for their pitcher. Two Chargers errors allowed the Mounties to touch home twice for the early lead. The home team did not wait long for their response as they tallied three in the bottom of the inning.

Albert De La Rosa got the bats going for the Chargers with a double which was followed with a walk from Dean Togio. Mt. Sac got themselves in trouble as the pitcher attempted a pick off that went past the first baseman that led Cypress's first run. With a runner on third, Cade Liefer grounded out to third that scored the tying run. A batter later, Nick Mascaro launched a shot over the right field wall to give the Chargers the lead, 3-2.

After the excitement of the first, both lineups became quiet on the scoreboard. Though Mt. Sac and Cypress created noise on the base paths, they both left many runners on base as they made the third out. The home team broke through in the 5th that extended their lead. A Mountie error allowed the inning to continue with two outs for Edgar Rosales. The second baseman laced a line drive single to left field to extend the Charger advantage to 4-2. After Mt. Sac walked Andre Naranjo, a bases loaded passed ball gave the home team their fifth run.

When the seventh inning stretch concluded, the Chargers went to work to extend their lead. With a runner on first, Rosales hammered a pitch over the right field wall to give Cypress their second home run on the day and a 7-2 score. The home team arms were successful as they kept the Mountie bats scoreless since the first frame.

Marscaro had a day at the plate as he went 2-3, scored three times and knocked in a run on his big blast. Rosales got himself on base with three hits and had four RBI's at the plate with help from his homerun. After Cypress starter Josh Laundry calmed the rivers from the 2-run Mt. Sac inning, the bullpen shut the door on the Mounties. Tucker Fountain threw 3.0 innings, only allowed two hits and stuck four in the process. Ben Miltko tossed 3.0, struck three on only one walk. Andrew Banda finished the game with three strikeouts in the 9th inning.  The Chargers went on to win their third game of the year and take the series win from Mt. Sac with a score of 7-2.
