Cypress Edges Out Irvine Valley 7-6 in Series Opener

CYPRESS, CA- Cypress Chargers baseball (14-12, 6-4 OEC) opened up a three game series versus the Irvine Valley Lasers (13-14, 2-8 OEC) on Tuesday afternoon. The Chargers were able to seal the victory with a 7-6 win.

Peter Werth (2-for-3, 4 RBI) was the player of the game for Cypress as he homered and had a game saving outfield assist in the top eighth inning. Andrew Kotin (4.0 IP) got the start on the bump for Cypress striking out 2 batters and allowing 1 earned run. Leadoff batter, Eddie Hacopian, went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Noah Karliner (2-for-5) and Dean Toigo (1-for-3) each recorded 1 RBI a piece. 

Irvine Valley got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a double to the right field wall. Kotin bounced back well striking out the next batter, but a two-out error by Edgar Rosales would allow the Lasers to score 2 more runs in the inning as they led 3-0. Noah Karliner would answer with a double in the bottom of the first scoring Eddie Hacopian. Peter Werth would follow with a single to right field tying up the game 3-3 after one inning. 

The Chargers and Lasers pitching would settle in through the second, third, and fourth innings as both teams remained deadlocked at three. IVC and Cypress would trade two-run homers in the fifth and the Lasers would recapture the lead in the sixth with a single. The Chargers wouldn't back down as Dean Toigo hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to even the game at 6. Logan Groff came out of the pen in the eighth for Cypress and pitched lights out in his two scoreless innings. The Chargers would push a run across the plate in the bottom of the eighth with a single by Eddie Hacopian. Cypress would hold on to win 7-6. 

UP NEXT: Cypress and IVC will continue their series Thursday, March 31st at the Orange County Great Park (Field 10). First pitch will be at 2pm.
