Chargers Offense Explodes with Five Home Runs in Win Over Merced

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress Chargers (5-6) looked to end their five game losing streak on Friday afternoon when they hosted the Merced Blue Devils (8-4). The Cypress bats took off for some much needed offense as they defeated the Blue Devils, 21-17, in an incredible offensive barrage.

Edgar Rosales (5-for-5, 2B, HR) was a triple short of the cycle and knocked in 3 RBI's while scoring 4 runs. Eddie Hacopian (3-for-6, 2B, 2 Runs) homered for Cypress as he drove in 4 runs out of the lead off spot. Brenden Harris went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, but had to leave the game early due to injury after his hot start in the cleanup spot. Nick Mascaro (1-for-2) took over for the injured Harris and made an immediate impact as he homered and drove in two runs for the Chargers. Peter Werth and Luke Honikel both hit their first home run of the season as Cypress launched a season high 5 home runs.

After a 1-1 first inning the Cypress offense got going in the bottom of the second with back to back home runs from Hacopian and Honikel to make the score 5-1. Merced added two runs in the top of the third, but the Cypress bats did not quiet down as they put up a six spot to make the score 12-3 after three innings. The Blue Devils would not go away as a flurry of errors on the defensive end for Cypress allowed five runs to cross the plate in the fourth inning. Mascaro and Werth would hit back-to-back jacks in the fifth inning to put the Chargers up 15-9. Pitching was an issue for both teams as the scoring would not slow down and both Merced and Cypress scored four runs in the 6th inning.

Entering the 7th inning Merced trailed 20-13, but a string of singles would bring them within three runs as the Chargers could not keep a comfortable lead. Cypress added the final run in the bottom of the eighth off a double from Eddie Hacopian to give the Chargers a 21-17 victory.

UP NEXT: Cypress will continue their four-game home stand as they host Grossmont on Tuesday, February 22nd. First pitch will be at 2pm.
