9th Inning Rally Falls Short, Chargers Lose 6-5

9th Inning Rally Falls Short, Chargers Lose 6-5

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress Chargers (4-2) hosted the LA Pierce Brahmas (2-3) on Tuesday afternoon looking to extend their win streak to five games. After a flurry of errors on defense, the Chargers were unable to get their bats going as they were defeated by the Brahmas 6-5.

Nick Bautista (3.1 IP, 4ER, 3BB and 5K's) got the start on the mound for Cypress as he worked quickly through the first three innings only allowing one hit. The Chargers struck first in the bottom of the third on a fielder's choice by Nathan Jackle (1-for-5, 1 RBI) to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. Disaster struck for Cypress in the top of the fourth inning as Robbie Treto (2-for-5, 2R) led off the inning with a triple off the center field wall. Ryan Berry grounded out to the shortstop as Treto crossed the plate to knot the game up at one. Nick Bautista seemed to settle down striking out catcher, Jorge Romero, but the third pitch strike got away from the catcher allowing Romero to reach first and then adavance to second base on the throw. As the next two batters reached base safely for LA Pierce the day was done for Baustista.

Cypress pitcher, Dylan Alanis, came into relief facing a tough task with the bases loaded and one out. A defensive blunder for Cypress, including two errors and a wild pitch, allowed four runs to cross the plate giving the Brahmas a 5-1 lead. In the bottom half of the fourth, Mario Tostado was able to cut the deficit to one as he launched his first homerun of the season, a three-run shot over the left field wall. LA Pierce would add one more run in the top of the fifth as the Chargers trailed by two entering the bottom of the fifth. The Chargers left three runners on base in the sixth inning, one in the seventh inning, two in the eighth inning without a scratch on the scoreboard.

Nathan Jackle would get the rally started in the ninth with a one-out double to center field. Noah Karliner (3-for-5, 1RBI, 1R) would notch his third hit of the day, bringing Jackle around to score. Isaac Rodriguez came to the plate with two-outs and a runner on first base. Rodriguez got a hold of a pitch and lined it to the outfield, but it was caught by center fielder Victor Pico to end the game. The Chargers defeat is their second at home this season, snapping their four-game win streak.

UP NEXT: Cypress will look to begin a new win streak on Thursday, February 10th, as they travel to Long Beach City College. First pitch will be at 2pm.
