Warriors Defeat Cypress At Home

TORRANCE, Calif. - The El Camino College Warriors baseball team defeated the Cypress College Chargers 8-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Warrior Field.

The Warriors moved to 4-2 for the season.  The Chargers picked up their first loss of the season to move to 4-1. 

The top of the order led the Warriors as the leadoff hitter Ryan Matsukawa was 3-for-4 with four runs and 2 RBIs.  Connor Meidroth was a perfect 4-for-4 from the dish with four RBIs including a two-run bomb.. Jack Nammack also had a multi-hit game in Wednesday's effort.

Aidan Irvine got the start and went 3.1 innings before departing from the game.  AJ Hiestand closed out the inning in relief.  James Broughton got the win after pitching the final five innings, allowing two runs on four hits, one walk, and fanning four batters.

The Warriors struck first in the bottom of the 1st inning after Ryan Matsukawa singled to lead off the inning and Connor Meidrothh hit a bomb over the left center wall to make it a 2-0 game.

The Chargers got one run back in the top of the 2nd inning before the Warriors responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half.  With runners on the corners, Ryan Matsukawa drove the runner on third base in on a fielder's choice.  Meidroth followed up with a single to put the runners on the corners again and Joey Replogle singled through the left side to score Matsukawa to make it a 4-1 game.

The Chargers tied the game in the third inning on a 3-run home run over the left field fence to make it 4-4.

The Warriors regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Matsukawa led the inning off with a knock to left field and Meidroth followed him up with a double to put both runners in scoring position.  Replogle brought in one run on a sac fly to right field to make it a 5-4 game.

The Warriors would add two more runs in the fifth inning.  With bases loaded and one out, Ryan Matsukawa worked a walk to bring in one run. Connor Meidroth hit a sac fly to bring in another run to make it a 7-4 game.

The Warriors added their final run in the seventh inning with the tag team of Matsukawa and Meidroth once again doing the work.  Matsukawa led the inning off with a base hit and Meidroth drove him in with double down the left field line to make it an 8-4 game.

The Chargers added two runs in the top of the eighth inning but Broughton was able to settle down and retire six of the last seven batters of the game.  

The Warriors next game will be on Thursday, February 8th vs Ventura College.  First Pitch is set for 1:30 PM.  The game was switched from Ventura College on Friday to tomorrow due to wet field conditions at Ventura.
