Total team effort for Pirates in 99-51 win over Chargers

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team turned on the afterburners early on the Cypress College Chargers and rolled to a 99-51 Orange Empire Conference win on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

It was the perfect storm for the state's fourth-ranked Pirates (14-3, 3-0 in the OEC) as they not only shot the lights out early, but they held the Chargers (6-11, 2-1) to just 21 first-half points while scoring 63 points of their own.

Bridgette McIntyre led Coast with 22 points, while Jordan Arreola added 21 points. Ashari Cassell tossed in 19 points to go with eight rebounds and five assists, while off the bench, Myia Collins notched a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

It was a solid box score for SEVERAL Pirate players including Alyssa Dreessen (nine points, 11 rebounds), Sabrina Lopez (eight points, five rebounds, four assists) and India Pines (seven rebounds in just 10 minutes of action).

The OCC defense clamped down on the Chargers, holding the guests to just 26.8% shooting from the floor (19-of-71) and 18.2% from 3-point range (2-of-11).

With 3:34 left in the first quarter, a made free throw from Cypress guard Emily Carbajal trimmed OCC's lead to 14-12. By the time Cypress had its next basket, Coast had gone on a 30-0 run over a span of 7:32 and that was all she wrote.

OCC's biggest lead was 56 early in the fourth quarter and the Pirates earned themselves sole possession of first place in the OEC standings.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at home against Riverside City College, beginning at 7 p.m.
