Santiago Canyon hosted Cypress College on Wednesday Night in a battle for sole possession of 2nd place in the Orange Empire Conference. In a tight contest, the Chargers came away with a 73-72 win on a buzzer beater shot from the corner. The Hawks have not been much of a first half team this season and it showed again on Wednesday. They started slow and were trailing 26-41 in their lowest scoring total in a half for the season. Aaron Wadman had 11 points and Kai Smith had 8 points in the half as the Hawks shot 37.5% from the field and couldn't get in an offensive rhythm.
The 2nd half of games have been good for SCC this season and it showed as the Hawks cut into the lead early and took the lead late in the game. Adam Holod nailed a 3 point shot to give the Hawks a one point advantage. After each team had a possession, the game came down to the final 9 seconds. Cypress drove and had a pass deflected. The ball rolled to the corner and a Cypress player picked it up and shot a long two pointer as the buzzer sounded. The ball went through the net to give Cyress the win. SCC was led in scoring by Wadman with 23 points. Smith added 15 points with no other player scoring double digits. Smith also led the Hawks in rebounding with 8 boards, while Wadman led the way with 5 assists.
SCC will be back in action on Friday as they host Orange Coast College. Tip-off is set for 6pm. With the loss tonight, Santiago Canyon's record drops to 12-7 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
