Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener to Cypress

TORRANCE, Calif. --- El Camino College fell behind by 26 points and never recovered, falling 72-53 to Cypress on Wednesday at the ECC Gymnasium.

The Warriors (0-1) had four players score in double figures, led by freshman Brandy Castaneda with 12. Sarah Downs added 11 points while Jaden Sanderson and Piper Takenaka had 10. But the team committed 25 turnovers on the night and the visiting Chargers (1-0) capitalized with 20 points off the Warriors miscues.

It was a rough shooting night for the Warriors, particularly in the first half when the team shot 20 percent from the field and just 1-for-11 from 3-point range.

That led to the Chargers taking a 24-point lead and they never looked back. For the game, the Warriors shot 25 percent (15-for-60) from the field and just 2-for-23 from beyond the arc.

The Warriors will return to action on Friday night to host Chaffey in another non-conference tilt. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
