Women's basketball team beats Cypress by 24 on the road

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team won its fourth straight Orange Empire Conference game, beating Cypress, 71-47, Wednesday night on the road.

In those four wins, IVC has out-scored opponents by 77 points.

The Lasers, ranked No. 14 in the state in this week's coaches poll, shot 49.1 percent (26 of 53) as a team from the field and 48.0 percent (12 of 25) from three-point range at Cypress.

Sophomore guard Emily Freeman was the star for the Lasers on Wednesday, going 6 of 9 from three-point range and scoring 18 points.

The six three-pointers were a season-high for Freeman. 

Irvine Valley improved its record to 13-6 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Lasers sit in second place in the conference standings.

Freeman also added five assists and three steals in the game.

Freshman guard Moka Saiki added 17 points and went 7 of 9 from the field for IVC.

Sophomore post player Makena Tomlinson ended with 13 points and seven rebounds.

And sophomore wing Christen Ziska chipped in eight points and four rebounds for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley held Cypress to just 25.0 percent (14 of 56) shooting from the field and forced 22 turnovers.

Freeman and freshman guard Haruka Mikuma each had three steals in the contest for IVC. Mikuma also finished with four assists.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, hosting Saddleback in a conference game at 6 p.m.
