Trinh's buzzer-beater lifts Pirates past Chargers

CYPRESS -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team picked up a HUGE conference road game on Wednesday, defeating host Cypress College, 71-69.

Annie Trinh, who finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, hit a running jumper in the final second of play to give the Pirates (16-7, 5-2 in the Orange Empire Conference) the victory. Karina Cabrera added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists and Alexis Legan contributed 14 points and seven rebounds.

Off the bench, Donyea Smith had a big night with 13 points and eight rebounds in just 12 minutes of action.

For the Chargers (14-10, 6-3), Malia Goldsmith added 20 points, while Jaylene Oviedo added 17 points.

In a game that stayed close right from the opening whistle, the game was tied at 66 when Smith came through with a made layup with 34 seconds remaining to put the Pirates up, 68-66. A made free throw by Noelle Duffy extended Coast's advantage to 69-66 with 23 seconds left.

Following a Cypress timeout, Oviedo came out and drilled a game-tying 3-pointer to even the score at 69 with 18 seconds left in regulation, and with no timeouts remaining, OCC had to hustle back and set up their offense for one final shot.

From there Trinh studied the floor, drove to her right and hit a floating jumper with one second left that found the bottom of the net, sealing the victory for the Pirates.

OCC's crazy, five-game-in-seven-day stretch wraps up on Friday at home against rival Golden West, beginning at 7 p.m.
