Chargers Shine in Santa Monica Tournament
High scoring games and great defense leads to Cypress taking two tournament wins
CYPRESS, CA - The Cypress College women's water polo team (6-11, 0-4 OEC) put together an impressive showing over the weekend, securing two dominant wins to highlight their continued rise in conference play. The Chargers' balanced offense and sharp defensive execution proved to be the difference across both contests.
In their opening game against East Los Angeles College, Cypress rolled to a 17–4 victory. The offense was primarily led by Jillian Van Gemert, who scored five goals and added two assists. Violet Trejo also contributed four goals and three assists. Mikaela Prieto orchestrated the offense with six assists and two goals, and goalkeeper Nince Abundis anchored the defense with six saves across four quarters. The Chargers' precision passing and unselfish play led to 15 team assists on 17 goals.
Cypress carried that momentum into their second matchup against El Camino, taking them down 14–13 in a tightly contested battle. Van Gemert once again delivered a standout performance, tallying seven goals and adding an assist while recording a team-high eight steals. Analyn Farro chipped in three goals, and Prieto dished out five assists and scored once. Abundis made nine saves to help seal the one-goal victory.
Across both games, the Chargers displayed depth and teamwork, combining for 31 goals and 28 assists in the tournament. Van Gemert led the way with 12 goals and 3 assists, while Prieto compiled 7 assists and 3 goals.
The pair of wins mark a strong tournament showing for Cypress as they continue building momentum heading into the next stretch of conference play.
