FULLERTON, CA – The Cypress women's water polo team (13-7, 2-5 OEC) went 1-2 in the OEC championship tournament hosted by Fullerton College on Thursday and Saturday.
The Chargers started the tournament by facing off against Saddleback College, who they defeated, 11-7. In the first quarter, Allison Gracia tallied three goals for the Chargers, while her teammates, Josie Miller and Natasha Velez, each tallied one of their own. Gracia continued to get on the score sheet in the second quarter with two goals. Jade Towgood also netted a goal in the second quarter. Third quarter goals came from Miller and Andrea Corrigan. Velez had the only goal for the Chargers in the fourth quarter, ending the game in favor of the Chargers, 11-7.
In the second game, the Chargers fell to Riverside, 12-3. With no goals in the first quarter, the Chargers found themselves down by five. The Chargers managed to get on the score sheet in the second quarter with two goals from Velez. Sara Morris would score the third and final goal for the Charger of the match in the third quarter.
The Chargers faced Golden West College in their last match-up for the tournaments third place game. Vellez would get the Chargers on the scoreboard in the first quarter, but the Rustlers would out score the Chargers, 4-1. Vellez netted two more goals for the Chargers in the second quarter along with one goal from Towgood. The Chargers would be shutout in the third and fourth quarter. The Rustlers would end up winning the game, 10-4.
The 2018 SoCal Water Polo Championship is set to take place November 8th-10th at Cerritos College. The Chargers are seeded #7 in the tournament and will take on #10 seed, Ventura College on November 8th at 11:30 am. The winner will take on the #2 seed, Santa Barbara November 9th at 11:30 am. The semi-final and final game will take place on Saturday, November 10th.
