Chargers Push Rustlers to Brink, Fall Short, 11-9

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's water polo team opened their season at home on Wednesday against Orange Empire Conference rival Golden West College. The Chargers fought hard, but eventually fell to the Rustlers, 11-9.

Golden West dominated the game early, jumping out to a 5-0 lead over the Lady Chargers. Cypress answered with back-to-back goals to end the first quarter trailing 5-2.

The Rustlers regained control at the start of the second quarter, taking a 7-2 lead over Cypress. However, the Chargers led by sophomores Natasha Velez and Josie Miller, scored five unanswered goals to end the half with the game tied at 7-7.

Cypress was unable to capitalize on the momentum, as Golden West played tough defense to shutout Cypress in the third quarter, allowing them to capitalize on turnovers and take a 10-7 lead into the fourth.

Velez and Allison Gracia would make it interesting, each adding goals in the final minute, but it was not enough as Cypress fell short, 11-9.

Women's water polo will resume OEC action at home next Wednesday, September 19 against Fullerton College at 3:00 pm.
