Women's Volleyball Takes Home Eight Awards at the State and Conference Level

CYPRESS, CA- Cypress Chargers volleyball finished a historical season with a 23-3 record to go along with their Orange Empire Conference Championship. The volleyball team was recognized at the state and conference level as seven athletes earned eight awards.

Vanila Pulu-Suliafu led the way for the Chargers as she earned First-Team All-State and was named Co-MVP of the Orange Empire Conference. Alli Arriolla joined Vanila as Co-MVP after her stellar performance this season.  Zoe Munn, Rachel Gonzales, and Alexis Flores all earned First-Team All-Conference honors. Tainea Allen and Amanda Risch rounded out the Chargers with their All-Conference Second-Team selections. 

Vanila Pulu-Suliafu etched her name into the record books in her freshman season with 57 aces which ranks 4th all-time in the single-season record book. The setter finished with 736 assists in her 23 matches played. Vanila added 203 digs, 106 kills and 32 blocks to her dominant freshman season. 

Alli Arriolla was the most dominant defensive player in the Orange Empire Conference this season. The Co-MVP finished with a conference high 93 blocks, averaging 1.21 blocks per set. Arriolla played in 23 matches in her freshman season as she led the Chargers to their first conference championship since 2017.  

 

FIRST TEAM 

Rachel Gonzales led the Chargers with 227 kills ranking sixth overall in the OEC. Gonzales is a freshman from Valley Christian High School whose athleticism as an outside hitter was a problem for defenses all year. Rachel's career game was played on November 5th when the Chargers hosted Irvine Valley. Gonzales finished with a season high 22 kills to go along with her 10 digs in a 3-2 Cypress victory. 

Libero, Zoe Munn, led the team with 310 digs ranking fourth in the OEC. With 49 aces, Munn ranked second in the OEC only behind her teammate, Vanila Pulu-Suliafu (57). The Huntington Beach High School Alumna has two games in which she recorded 26 digs, which was a team season high. 

Sophomore, Alexis Flores, was a defensive star for the Chargers as she finished with 88 total blocks, second in the OEC. Flores, recorded 153 kills completing her Cypress career with a total of 245. The middle blockers highlight this season came in a three game stretch (Oct. 20-27th) where she recorded 7,8,8 total blocks in three consecutive games during conference play. Alexis will continue to shine as she takes the court in 2022 for the Cypress beach volleyball team.  

 

SECOND TEAM

Tainea Allen had a successful 2021 campaign as she finished with 205 kills and 138 digs. Allen, had double digit kills in 11 of the 19 matches she played, ranking sixth in the OEC with 3.15 kills per set. 

Amanda Risch played 21 matches and ended the season with 141 kills, 49 of which came in OEC play. Risch's career game against Irvine Valley where she recorded 15 kills, 6 digs and 2 aces.
